4.1 Cell Biology Lesson 6
2
All: Understand that plant cells are specialised to fulfil
particular functions and observe an example of these under a microscope. Most: Explain how certain features of a cell enable to be better at its function, for example surface area of a root hair cell. Some: Know detailed example of plant specialised cells and explain how their features improve its efficiency. Know the difference between plant and animal cell differentiation and how this allows plants to regrow from small sections.
3
Homework Write a job advert for a specialised cell for example:
“Cell wanted: Must be a strong swimmer as they will be required to swim long distances in competition with millions of other hopeful applicants. The successful applicant will contain vast numbers of mitochondria to provide sufficient energy for this long journey. A capsule containing digestive enzymes at the head is desirable to ensure they are capable of breaking into the egg at the end of their journey. A large nucleus containing dna is essential. If you have these features and think you can be part of our every growing team, please enquire within for an application form”.

A cross section of a leaf
1) Do any of these cells look like the model plant cell we have previously looked at? 2) How are the other cells different? 3) Why are they different?
5
Root hair cell Observe root hair cells under the microscope
And answer the questions.
7
How is cell differentiation different in plants and animals?
Animal cells differentiate into the different types very early on in development – therefore skin cells can only create more skin cells etc. Plant cells differentiate throughout their lifetimes – therefore a plant cells can grow and divide into many different types. This is why a new plant can be made from a cutting of an old one.
