WHALE AND DOLPHIN FACTS

LONGEST MIGRATION The gray whales’ annual 10,000-12,000-mile migration between Mexico’s Baja calving lagoons and the cold arctic seas is the longest known migration for any mammal.

LARGEST WHALE

LARGEST WHALE Blue whales grow to be about 80 feet long on average, weighing about 120 tons.

LARGEST WHALE

LARGEST WHALE A Blue Whale's tongue weighs around 3 tons and when fully expanded its mouth is large enough to hold up to 100 tons of food and water.

LARGEST WHALE Despite the size of its mouth, the dimensions of its throat are such that a Blue Whale cannot swallow an object wider than a beach ball.

LARGEST WHALE Blue whales are the loudest animals on Earth! Their call reaches levels up to 188 decibels.

LARGEST WHALE The blue whale is louder than a jet, which reaches only 140 decibels! Human shouting is only 70 decibels; sounds over decibels are painful to human ears.

LONGEST TOOTH The Narwhal is a rarely seen Arctic whale

LONGEST TOOTH All narwhals have two teeth in their upper jaw. After the first year of a male narwhal's life, its left tooth grows outward, spirally. This long, single tooth projects from its upper jaw and can grow to be 7-10 feet long

How do whales and dolphins sleep?
Because of their undersea environment, whales and dolphins must be conscious breathers. This presents a problem, since mammalian brains need to enter an unconscious state from time to time in order to function correctly

How do whales and dolphins sleep?
The solution for whales and dolphins is to let one half of the brain sleep at a time. In this way, the animal is never completely unconscious, but it still gets the rest it needs.
