Magnetism
2
Anywhere in the Universe…
You may observe matter…made of molecules…made of atoms, which are held together by positive and negative charges. You may observe that negative charges (electrons) can move from one place to another (electricity). You may observe that electrons can be moved through an electrical circuit to produce energy.
3
Why do you think wrapping a wire around a metal rod in a circuit made paper clips stick to the metal rod?
4
Remember that all objects can have an overall charge:
Positive Negative Neutral (no charge) Like charges repel. Opposite charges attract. Some materials on Earth naturally attract objects made of metals like iron or steel. These are called…

Magnets
6
Magnets have two ends called magnetic poles.
North-Seeking Pole South-Seeking Pole Like poles repel, while opposite poles attract. Just like negative and positive electrical charges!
7
A magnetic field is the space around a magnet where the force of the magnet can act.
This is strongest at the poles. This field is invisible, but tiny iron pieces can show the shape of these fields
10
Earth has its own magnetic field.
Caused by molten metals in the core. Compasses work because the metal needles line up with Earth’s magnetic field.
11
A magnetic field can be produced in an electrical circuit.
The magnetic field only stays when the circuit is closed (ON). Wrapping the wire of the circuit around a metal rod will make the magnetic field stronger. This is called an…

Electromagnets… Why do you think they are important?
