Vision and Mission Statements
Our Vision: We, at John I. Burton High School, in our commitment to excellence will provide a high-quality, comprehensive education for all students in a safe learning environment. We will offer relevant and engaging instruction through the use of existing and new technologies that will produce critical thinkers and problem solvers that no longer rely on memorization only. We will foster creativity, innovative thinking and pride in America, as we prepare our students to live in and contribute to the global economy. Our students will graduate as confident leaders; individuals prepared to be lifelong learners not only in our community but our nation and the world. Producing critical thinkers for a successful future. Our Mission: Every Student, Every Day, Every Class

Purpose and Direction Goal 1: To carry out our Vision by executing our Mission. Strategies: Every student will be offered to take advantage of our expanding curriculum offering of Ecology, Exploratory STEM, Cyber Ethics, Resource Management, French, Teacher Cadet, Exploratory Creative Writing Every student will have a Resource Officer available every day Every 8th Grader will be in the Exploratory Program, including Creative Writing, Spanish, Major Clarity and STEM Every 10th Grader will take the ASVAB Career Readiness Test and be given interpretation and guidance

Every student will have an individual meeting with our guidance counselor for updates and future planning Every 11th and 12th grader will have individual meetings with a College Advisor Every 10th grader will visit and tour the Career and Technical School Every 10th grader will visit and tour Mountain Empire Community College Every Dual Enrollment Academy student has the support of a college advisor Every 8th and 9th grade student will have his/her own use of a personal chrome book

Goal 2: Increase avenues of communication to our stakeholders and community Strategies: Formed a Parent Advisory Committee Library has its own Web Page Guidance has its own Web Page Updated School Calendar of Events available on our School Web Page R-School with all athletic events updated on School Web Page Channel 51 updated weekly

Principal Twitter Account with school and student information School Twitter Account School Facebook Pass out over 400 athletic schedule posters to the community Parent Portal available to all parents Organized a Homecoming Committee for the purpose of organization and communication

Improve Student Achievement Teaching and Assessing for Learning
Goal 3: To reach or exceed the state average in reading for English 8 and EOC English 11 and exceed the state average in Science Standards. Strategies: Multiple Choice Writing and Essay SOL Testing in the English 10 Classes this fall to allow the entire 11th grade year to focus on reading skills. Looping 7th and 8th Grade English Teachers for student and teacher familiarity and content experience.

Teaching and Assessing for Learning (cont.)
Implementation of MECC Talent Search Program to increase reading comprehension in the target population of ninth and tenth grade students with SOL scores below grade level. Students who meet the criteria will meet in small groups twice per week. Science students will have opportunity for remediation before, during and after school. Science Teachers will administer benchmark tests to align instruction and guide curriculum using the CIP program. Science Teachers will regularly monitor the VDOE website for the latest information and strategies regarding student performance. Teachers will implement PBL in the classroom

Demonstrate Fiscal Responsibility RESOURCES AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS
Goal 4: The Sponsor of any club or program that does a fundraiser for school will fill out cash receipt log and attach receipts received from any student for an amount over $10. Strategies: Director of Finance gave a training at the beginning of year and passed out receipt logs and books. Sponsors and program directors are required to use this procedure when turning in monies to the bookkeepers. Continue to implement all bookkeeping procedures as indicated by the Finance Supervisor.

Promote Student Activities that Promote
Personal Development RESOURCES AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS Goal 5: Implement Project Based Learning through the support of Project Real. Strategies: 8th Grade English Courses will utilize and implement units of study through Project Real program. Science teachers will work together to develop and implement PBL in the classroom to challenge students to apply the curriculum and develop problem solving/life based skills
