2 Ho Chi Minh & Vietminh Ho Chi Minh-Vietnamese nationalist who helps create the Communist Party. Vietminh-an organization whose goal it was to win Vietnam’s independence from foreign rule. US gives close to $1 billion in aid to France, in order to fight Ho Chi Minh and the Vietminh.

3 Domino Theory The French are driven out of Vietnam and SE Asia.
Domino Theory-if one country fell to Communists then its neighbors would also fall.

4 Dinh Diem, Vietcong, and Minh Trail
Ngo Dinh Diem-South Vietnam’s president, a strong anti-Communist, corrupt government that suppressed opposition. Vietcong-Communist opposition fighters. Ho Chi Minh Trail-a network of paths used by North Vietnam to transport supplies to the Vietcong in South Vietnam.

5 Tonkin Gulf Resolution
When it seemed the South Vietnamese government would be overthrown, the US increased it’s involvement. Tonkin Gulf Resolution-adopted by Congress in 1964, giving the president broad powers to wage war in Vietnam.
