Ho Chi Minh-Vietnamese nationalist who helps create the Communist Party.
Vietminh-an organization whose goal it was to win Vietnam’s independence from foreign rule.
US gives close to $1 billion in aid to France, in order to fight Ho Chi Minh and the Vietminh.

3. Domino Theory The French are driven out of Vietnam and SE Asia.
Domino Theory-if one country fell to Communists then its neighbors would also fall.

4. Dinh Diem, Vietcong, and Minh Trail
Ngo Dinh Diem-South Vietnam’s president, a strong anti-Communist, corrupt government that suppressed opposition.
Vietcong-Communist opposition fighters.
Ho Chi Minh Trail-a network of paths used by North Vietnam to transport supplies to the Vietcong in South Vietnam.

5. Tonkin Gulf Resolution
When it seemed the South Vietnamese government would be overthrown, the US increased it’s involvement.
Tonkin Gulf Resolution-adopted by Congress in 1964, giving the president broad powers to wage war in Vietnam.
