1 Session 4-5 : Partner Strategies and Vision
When you go to work on a Monday morning – how do you know what you should be doing? What about next week? What about next month? What about next year?

2 A Strategic plan is a means of achieving your organisation’s VISION
Where we are now Strategic plan Vision / Mission Where we want to be

3 Vision Reminders? Its ‘the desired future state’ It should be ambitious / aspirational It should be about the people your organisation serves It should reflect what you are most passionate about – what is your ‘calling’? Eg. Our vision is for vulnerable children, women and men in East Africa to live more self-reliant lives.

4 With your partner collegue, write down the Vision of your organisation
task With your partner collegue, write down the Vision of your organisation

5 What is a Strategic Plan?
Document that puts down on paper the long term direction of your organisation. Doesn’t have to be long Doesn’t have to be technical Does have to be easily understood, useful and flexible

6 Strategic Planning is useful because……
It gives you a change to ‘look up’ from the day-to-day Reflect back on what you have done Make choices and priorities Decide what NOT TO DO

7 Gives you direction and stops you being blown off course

8 Strategic Planning – why is it tricky?
We are trying to look into the future There are so many sectors we could work in – health, education, enterprise development, water… There is so much need amongst beneficiaries We don’t have time for all this planning, we know what we are doing, we should just get on with it! What if future donor opportunities fall outside our plan

9 Strategic Planning – Key choices
Do we give a little help to many or more intensive help to few? Do we provide services or campaign for change (if both what is the mix)? Do we stick closely to our plans or deviate to access new funding opportunities?

10 Task –With reference to your Vision – (the big picture) make notes on the following:
Think about who you exist to serve and what THEY would say you should be doing? Decide on a time span for your plan – between 3 and 5 years Look into the future and predict external changes that will affect you. (PESTLE) Political Economic Social Legal Environmental

11 Task –make notes on the following:
Review your present situation Identify what you know works well (theory of change) and how to take it forward Identify what hasn’t worked – and want to stop What do you want to do that’s new or different?
