News Broadcast Wednesday, January 10, 2018 Have out: Pencil/Pen

2 SPEECH NEWS AND NOTES We just finished our demonstrations, honing in on the importance of explaining a process in a simplified way. Now, we’re going to look at a broadcast to consider the ‘nuts and bolts’ of giving what makes a news cast. Afterwards, you’ll have time to pick your topic and begin putting together your materials.

3 The basic parts of a newscast are:
Introduction Interviews Non-interview shots Conclusion

4 Introduction The introduction simply serves to inform viewers about what they are about to see and to grab their attention. In some ways this is the most important part of the broadcast, so plan it well.

5 Introduction (continued)
Also, after each interview, a shot or voiceover can introduce the next interview, and this is referred to as a segue. It should only be used if one interview doesn't smoothly transition to the next/is about a different aspect of the same story.

6 Interviews Interviews contain the bulk of the information provided by sources. They should contain the answers to questions, but if the introduction and segues are constructed in a certain way, the questions can be omitted.

7 Interviews (continued)
For camera work, remember to have the camera at eye level, with the eyes on the upper third, and the widest a shot should be is from the chest to the top of the head.

8 Non-Interview Shots Non-interview shots are used to keep a flow to the story. Take shots of things related to the story and place them over the audio of an interview.

9 Non-Interview Shots (continued)
Generally, you show the person being interviewed for a few seconds, then show one or two related shots, then you can conclude, go back to the interview, or cut to a segue.

10 Conclusion The conclusion can be used for any updates since the interviews, a comment about possible outcomes, and/or any remarks that sum up the story.

11 Deets: News cast Time of Creation: No less than 5 minutes
Objectives covered: At least four areas of content (news, sports, weather, ads). Video recorded and edited for quality. Each group member must contribute to the creation by speaking one part and writing/filming/editing other parts. Content must be timely (current) and meaningful. News may be catered to either your team or can be national, but it must be approachable by all audiences (meaning, I should be able to relate). Clever and humorous are fine, but not at the expense of your final product. Keep it professional.
