2 PURPOSE OF STUDY The purpose of this study was to rank 10 school districts using four indicator factors financial, instructional, achievement and demographic. Utilizing this data we can assess where our target district ranks amongst the other districts in their standardized testing scores and what factors have contributed to their ranking. Moreover we will also be able to identify, Where are we as a district? How far must we still go? Are we better or worse than we think? What will it take for us to improve?

3 DEFINITION of Terms Almanac: A publication containing statistical, tabular, and general information…often including a miscellany of other information (Hughes) Aspiration District: A similar district that appears to be outperforming the target district. (Hughes) INDICATORS: The working definition of the term indicators would be that “indicators are statistics which reflect the features and performance of an institution measured or assessed. They provide answers to questions related to how well an education system is functioning within a broad standard or reference point. Indicators make a comparison over time among jurisdiction, or against some predetermined standard or set of criteria. They provide a snapshot of current conditions by reflecting the characteristics jurisdiction relative to vision and mission and the attainment keeping in view the criteria of quality education. (Pankajam G. 2005) Education and Development. India Gyan Publishing House. Target District: A district that does not appears to be the all categories.( Hughes) School almanac definitions may be found at

4 Action Questions: Research Questions:
What will we compare our district to? What indicators will we choose that will assist up in creating our improvement plan? Research Questions: What did we learn from the data collected? Similar Themes Patterns Discrepancies Edgar Schein What should we now do with what we have discovered? What must we know investigate further?

31 CONTENT WHAT DO WE HAVE? DEMOGRAPHICS: Middle class community with an average size population and home values falling in the median range. Student enrollment is in the low range in relationship to the our comparison schools. FINANCIAL: Our target school has the lowest total expenditures from the 10 districts while spending a great percentage on instruction while receiving a comparable amount of state aid when compared to the other districts. INSTRUCTION: With an average population the target district has the least amount of teachers and well as the largest student teacher ratio forcing larger class size ACHIEVEMENT: Ranks the lowest NYS Standardized exam scores in English and Mathematics.

32 COMPARE Who Are We? Where do we want to go? Our target district is an average community that is academically falling behind compared to similar districts. In addition to academic deficiencies there exists certain shortages in everyday instruction and operation. The district seeks to increase standardized scores through the grades while improving the instruction.

33 CONTRAST Where Do We Stand? The Hicksville School District needs to improve their standardized test scores with a majority of the focus in the middle school grades. Their ranking is very alarming in this area since they have scored the lowest in most of the categories. In addition the aspiration district far exceeds the target district standings in every category and ranking.

34 CONTEXT Why Are We Here? According to the data our target district is primarily weak in the achievement ranking which is do in part because of the lowest standardized test scores. In addition the instructional indicators also way heavily upon the ranking because of the class size and low number of personnel.

35 CONSTRUCT How do we move? It is imperative that the district hire additional staff in order to reduce the student teacher ratio which can increase educational effectiveness.

36 FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS
The Hicksville school district needs improvement in several areas however, the most important area which will also ensure other problem areas to improve is the increase of teachers employed by the district. We need a plan on attracting trained professionals. Moreover it is recommended that we seek professionals that can also assist our growing ethnic population. Hispanic population: Asian & other population: Data should be made available to staff so that they may better prepare themselves to address the deficiencies that exist in the present curriculum as well as the students themselves.

37 FUTURE REASEARCH RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommend that further research be conducted using perceptions data in order to acquire data from students teachers, and the community. (Bernhardt) A collection of school processes data can also be vital in the understanding of the school’s programs, instructional strategies, and classroom practices. (Bernhardt) Cross sectional analysis should be done in order to better understand the significance that one factor has on another as well as how the previous years results have influenced where we are today.(Monson)
