History The word "asthma" originates from the Greek meaning short of breath, meaning that any patient with breathlessness was asthmatic. The term was refined in the latter part of the 19th Century with the publication of a treatise by Henry Hyde Salter entitled "On Asthma and its Treatment". Asthma makes it so that the lungs swell up, fill with mucus, and get smaller, making it hard to breathe

Out of kids, 2 out of 3 boys are affected Out of adults, 2 to 3 women are affected Cultural group most affected are African Americans

Symptoms Wheezing - A whistling sound heard when breathing in or out.
Coughing - A cough that may not go away and often occurs or worsens at night or early morning. Chest Tightness - Feeling as if something is squeezing or sitting on your chest. Shortness of Breath - Feeling as though you can’t catch your breath. You may feel as though you are breathless.

Respiratory System Asthma affects the body by limiting the flow of air into the lungs. When certain substances trigger an asthma attack, cholinergic receptors in the airways respond by tightening the muscles. This process is called bronchoconstriction.
