WHAT IS NUCLEAR POWER? WHAT IMPACT DOES IT HAVE ON THE BODY?
Nuclear power is the use of nuclear reactions that release nuclear energy to generate heat. The term includes nuclear fission, nuclear decay and nuclear fusion. WHAT IMPACT DOES IT HAVE ON THE BODY? It damages DNA, especially as it assembles in dividing cells. High enough doses damage brain cells and such doses are invariably fatal.

HEALTH AND SOCIETY Residents where nuclear fuel are created are at risk for exposure to unhealthy amounts of radiation. Children under 5 years of age carry 40% of the foodborne disease burden, with deaths every year. Diarrhoeal diseases are the most common illnesses resulting from the consumption of contaminated food, causing 550 million people to fall ill and deaths every year.

FOOD Unsafe food creates a vicious cycle of disease and malnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly and the sick. Foodborne diseases impede socioeconomic development by straining health care systems, and harming national economies, tourism and trade. Accidental radioactive releases as well as the inevitable leakage of radioactive waste will contaminate water and food chains and expose humans and animals now and for generations to come.

REPERCUSSIONS ON JAPAN’S FOOD INDUSTRY AND ANIMALS

Fukushima vegetables, seen in these photos, are gnarled and have strange deformities. These are mutant vegies, the result of the 2011 nuclear power plant disaster

The food industry in Japan is under pressure, as the government adds to the list of produce that has excessive levels of nuclear radiation. Shipments of leaf vegetables, spinach and milk from the area around the stricken Fukushima plant have been halted. The government says the situation is not at a stage where people should be worried.
