2 General Resume Guidelines
Contact information should be listed as font size 18 – 24 and at the top of each document Font size in body of resume should be minimum 10, maximum 12 Margins should be .5 inch – 1 inch Be sure font, etc. is consistent throughout resume (and accompanying documents such as cover sheet, references) Font is easy to read No spelling or grammatical errors No personal pronouns Resume design consistent with profession If using a design element (architecture, VCT) be sure brand is consistent in all documents Prefer one page resume from students (if more than one page, no less than page and a half) Omit high school Save and attach as PDF when sending via List references on separate document

8 Volunteer, Community, Extracurricular
List in reverse chronological order List name of activity List role List month and year List any responsibilities, duties, activities associated with activity using resume action verbs Use present and past tense as appropriate

9 Revise and Customize Revise your resume as you learn and gain new skills Review your resume for each job you apply to Customize your resume for each job if necessary Match terminology in description to resume if possible i.e. description lists “must be proficient in Photoshop”, list proficient in Photoshop

utilize references from multiple companies or organizations Updates your references about your interview process so they can anticipate when to receive a reference check Follow up with a thank you note to your references Keep electronic copies of your reference contacts and letters for future use Don’ts Assume a former supervisor or faculty advisor will serve as your reference just because you have an established relationship Assume your references have effective written and verbal skills to communicate your ability as a successful candidate Forget to ask and communicate each time you use them as a reference, Be inconsiderate. Provide your references with enough time to respond to your request UTILIZE FRIENDS AND FAMILY - References should consist of professional connections and not friends or family who have not worked with you in a professional setting
