Questions of the Day… How did the Red Scare impact the US after World War I? How did American politics change after World War I during the 1920’s?

Economic Boom During the 1920’s, the American economy was booming after WWI!!! The stock market was a bull market- a period of rising stock prices America was in a consumer revolution- new, affordable goods were available to the public Buying on margin- purchasing stock on credit

Post World War I Many Americans returned home after WWI feeling traumatized after what they experienced

Kellogg-Briand Pact International agreement established between many foreign powers and the US to outlaw war It was useless Did not succeed in preventing future war

Dawes Plan Plan established by the US to help Germany pay war reparations Drained the US economy which contributed to an eventual depression

The Red Scare After WWI, the Bolshevik Revolution and rise of Communist Russia scared many Americans leading to a Red Scare Red Scare- widespread fear of a communist revolution in the US

Palmer Raids Palmer Raids- In a series of raids, the police arrested many, mostly immigrants, who were suspected of being communist Many immigrants were deported

Two Italian immigrants who were known anarchists Charged with murder and sentenced to death on very little evidence Many believed they were convicted more for their ethnicity and political beliefs than the facts

After World War I, the government returned to Pre-Progressive Era ideas Laissez-Faire Economics- little government regulation Return to being isolated from the rest of the world Supported big business

Presidency consumed by corruption Teapot Dome Scandal- Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was illegally selling oil reserves out west to private companies
