1 PMI Online Course Development Training

2 Introduction First Impressions Our Goals
What do you (think) you know about online education? What have you seen/heard? Our Goals Quality Consistency

3 Advantages of Online Can make use of online resources—weblinks, interactive demos, etc. Instructor can interact 1:1 with students more easily Anonymity can help students be more assertive “Classtime” is anytime—not just certain hours

4 Disadvantages of Online
Students must be self-motivated to stay on track and complete assignments Instructors must be proactive Content/assignments must be engaging Interaction may be less immediate, students may feel isolation

5 Course Creation ??s How will you initially engage your students?
How will you provide information or knowledge that you believe is essential for students to learn? What will you do to promote interaction so that students can enhance or add to their understanding of initial information presented? How will you assess what your students have learned?

6 Development Principles
Avoid rehashing the textbook “Guide on the side” vs. “sage on the stage” Online content ≠ lectures Online content is opportunity for students to interact with the information Give students opportunities to interact with each other and instructors as well. Address different learning styles whenever possible

7 Course Elements Part I Course home – Announcements, introduction to course, What’s New, and checklist. Syllabus –Standard elements, similar to on-ground syllabus. Most important for development are Objectives. Course Schedule – Due Dates for assignments Grading Information –Rubric for each assignment to help instructors grade papers. Not necessary for exams.

8 Course Elements Part II
Lesson Home page – introduction to lesson. Standard image included on page Topic pages – content of lesson. May contain text, links, examples, animations, ungraded activities Assignments – assessments, dropbox, journals, discussions
