1 REPRESENT Heading – Debating 4 Give many examples.
Warm-up task What is your understanding of the word REPRESENT Give many examples. (What similes, metaphors, and symbols do you know?)

2 Social Networking – good or bad? Everyone hold up your homework.
You had to argue against your own beliefs. Social Networking – good or bad? Everyone hold up your homework. Volunteers to say their argument aloud – hands up.

3 Emotive language is all around us.
It is in adverts, news headlines, reports, speeches and you use it too. It is any language that aims to convince us to believe in something. (Answer this question): What is a rose? (remember the warm-up)

4 Read the following poem:
Words can have two different types of meaning. A rose is a flower but gives the idea of love. Call a woman a kitten, but never a cat; You can call her a mouse, cannot call her a rat; Call a woman a chicken, but never a hen Or you surely will not be her caller again. You can say she's a vision, can't say she's a sight; And no woman is skinny, she's slender and slight; If she should burn you up, say she sets you afire And you'll always be welcome, you tricky old liar. Read the following poem:

5 Use words with negative meanings against your opponents: greedy, selfish, old.
Use positive connotations about your side: charitable, new, creative.

6 Activity While some emotive words have favourable meanings, others have unfavourable meanings, for example: Smart vs. Nerdy Careful vs. unadventurous Youthful vs. immature These pairs mean the same thing but are different.

7 Activity sheet Look at the following list.  Separately, put each pair of words into a similar sentence.  How does the mood of the sentence change? Ambitious vs. unrealistic example answer: Billy is very ambitious and wants to go to college. Billy is very unrealistic and wants to go to college. ‘Ambitious’ sounds nice / positive / hopeful / happy but ‘unrealistic’ then sounds mean / negative / depressing / sad. Smart vs. Nerdy Careful vs. unadventurous Youthful vs. immature

8 Debating Checklist Here are some aspects of debating. Whenever we do one of these in class, put a tick beside it.
