5.14 Flash-drafting
2
CONNECTION On shows like Iron Chef, contestants pick recipes they have cooked many times before so they don’t have to look back at the recipe every five seconds. You have practiced the writing process many times, just like those chefs have practiced their recipes.
3
TEACHING POINT Today I want to teach you that sometimes writers decide to get their writing down quickly because flash-drafting can help them get the whole of a piece down so they can see what they need to revise.
4
TEACHING Some of you will flash-draft a brand new memoir today. Some of you may stick with an idea you’ve practiced before. But you need to write fast and furious to get your entire idea down on paper. See me draft in the air. See how I look my plan over, think about how my memoir will go, then start drafting? Now you draft in the air!
5
LINK Remember to look over your plans, think about the big picture of how you want your memoir to go, and then start drafting!
6
MIDWORKSHOP Remember, keep your big picture in mind and write, write, write! Don’t worry about perfection. That comes later. Right now, just get the broad strokes, the big parts of your draft down.
7
SHARE Compare your flash-draft to the memoir checklist. In what ways does your writing measure up? What should your next steps be?
