REALISM

Realism ( ) A movement that was born out of the harsh reality of the Civil War After the Civil War, Americans moved to a focus on real, everyday events. Newspapers and first hand accounts became popular. Americans wanted to read clear language that they could connect to as opposed to the philosophical language of Romanticism

Realism – Aspects of writing
Writing began to reflect the reality of a place – it used the local dialect and accent (local color), and the setting was portrayed in detail (Regionalism) Stories also used real, everyday characters that reflected the realities of life. Since life was hard in the expanding frontiers of America, these stories reflected a pessimism or darker vision of humanity. These stories also used intense DETAIL to “paint” as real a picture as possible for the audience. Writing and Art during the period of Realism sought to depict or describe the 5 senses to give the audience a sense of place.

REALISM To Naturalism Realism gave birth to a minor or offshoot movement known as Naturalism. Naturalism was a much more extreme version of Realism and focused on the destructive aspects of environment and heredity. Naturalism moved pessimism to fatalism. Stories from this movement never have a good ending with the characters often suffering from the horrible realities of their environments.
