Basics of the project “FERTILISANT DURABLE” = “SUSTAINABLE FERTILISING PRODUCT” The aim : To propose to dealers, and final end-users, a key to easily identify fertilising product coming out from Circular Economy. The condition of success for producers : make something easy ! The idea : A common trademark that ensures the final user about the origin of the fertilisers, with a guaranty of circular origin and compliance with national regulation “sustainable” and not “circular” because : it is easily and understandable by the end user there is no organic connotation
4
History Launched on 24th November 2016, during the convention “Agriculture Circulaire” organised by Afaïa Why those organisations proposed the brand « FERTILISANT DURABLE » ? To formalize their engagement in favour of the sustainable development and the circular economy, To highlight the beneficial commitment of circular fertilising products on the environment, To contribute to the promotion and the growth of the return into the soil of the fertiliser from renewable sources. Le CRT is a French think-tank, neutral and apolitical, focusing on the question of the development of practices of recovery and return to the ground and application of biodegradable waste. The CRT owns and manages the brand. Afaïa is the French federation of producers of : growing media, soil improvers, organic and organo-mineral fertilisers, biostimulants and mulches.
5
Scope and rules CONDITIONS FOR USE OF THE BRAND
The fertilising product must contain at least 60 % of major nutrient (N, P, K) from renewable sources. “Renewable sources” means that the system of production doesn’t require raw material from mining activity, or from the combination of atmospheric nitrogen with natural gas hydrogen. The fertilising product should comply with the French regulation (Articles L to L of the Rural Code) or must comply with the articles R to R of the Environnemental Code if the return into the soil needs a land application local permit. The producer has to comply with the rules of the trademark use CURRENT SCOPE Organic soil improvers Organic fertilisers Organo-mineral fertilisers Open to growing media and mulches Fertilising products intended to all markets (professional and hobby) and uses (organic farming or conventional, depending of raw materials)
6
How does it work ? REQUIREMENT SPECIFICATION
Compliance with 3 criteria MONITORING The producer has to fill each year a form for an annual usage of the brand : company identity : Name, type of installation, address, contact For each fertilising product using the brand identity : name of the fertilising product, type of marketing authorisation, volume placed on the market, listing of renewably-sourced raw materials, share of NPK renewably-sourced. The producer can be audited by a certified and independent organism HOW TO APPLY ? That’s simple ! You just have to fill the application form on the website of the CRT
7
How should it inspire the European regulation ?
Commons ambition for European project and Fertilisant Durable : To facilitate the 'closing the loop’ of the circular economy, by promoting circular fertiliser. Create a transversal label for all fertilising products and growing media categories Do not create confusion with other regulations like organic farming Build up a simple system Strong societal demand in France (also in Europe) about development of Circular Economy, with, by example: EGA (September-October 2017 : French General Committee for food supply) National initiative for Circular Economy: to be launched in 2018
