3 A thriving Life Sciences sector
The Life Sciences sector in Wales employs around 11,000 people in over 350 companies.1 - Does not include allied consultancy: marketing, market research, medical communications, health economics. Welsh Government: Feb 1 raise.wales

4 Future-proof careers Health innovation, by definition, represents the future. In times of economic uncertainty it is all the more important to justify the price of new health innovations – Health Economics. Economics as a University course has a greater return on student financial investment than many other courses.2 For the future of work in Wales… “we must foster the development of transferable skills that are difficult to automate, such as creativity and critical thinking competencies, alongside skills for the digital economy, technical skills, and in STEM subjects.”3 2 Sean Coughlan. Biggest winners and losers from degrees. BBC news online. 27th November 2018 Wales Centre for Public Policy. November Future of Work in Wales Report 3 raise.wales

7 The need to RAISE awareness
Most companies at career fairs represented ‘graduate schemes’ that were based outside of Wales I had never heard of the term ‘health economics’ until I came out of University. As an A level student I was never informed about the available career /study paths in the health technology space I had a very limited understanding of the health technology environment As a student at University I did not have a career path in mind raise.wales

8 The need to create opportunity
Work experience options for science-interested pupils in Ammanford Limited places: GP surgery Limited places: Vets Limited places: Community Hospital Limited places: Chemist raise.wales

9 A problem that needs solving
Carmarthenshire contains a number of areas which are in the “most deprived tenth” of Wales. In Wales, 142,595 (22%) children and young people aged under 20 live in poverty. 17.3% of people in Carmarthenshire are on social benefits (job seekers/incapacity) In the ex-mining towns of South Wales, children are more likely to live in poverty or deprivation than most other places in Wales. Being NEET is associated with poor health outcomes later in life, and a greater likelihood of contact with the criminal justice system. Poverty is defined as a household income less than 60% of the median UK income. Deprivation is measured by looking at income, health, education, geographical access to services, community safety, physical environment and housing. raise.wales
