1 Writing a style analysis

2 Step one – figure out theme sentence and evidence
Decide on a theme sentence. For periods 1, 3, and 5, you will need a theme sentence that is seen in both movies. For periods 2 and 7, you will choose a theme sentence that is seen in either movie. Now, figure out which scenes and cinematic techniques show your theme. Periods 1, 3, and 5, you need 4 examples (2 in each body paragraph). Periods 2 and 7, you need 2 examples – one for each technique.

3 Step two – write your thesis sentence and introduction
Use your thesis sentence and introduction writing handout as a guide. Remember to build into your thesis sentence. Thesis sentence is the last sentence in your introduction. Include Burton’s influences in the introduction.

4 Step three – write your body paragraphs
Each body paragraph needs a topic sentence and a sentence of closure.  Each body paragraph: needs an example of a cinematic technique and the effect it creates. commentary showing the significance of the example and effect. commentary relating back to your theme.

5 Step four – writing the conclusion
The conclusion needs to show the relevance of your theme in today’s society. Why does your theme matter? How is the movie and Tim Burton relevant today? Answer these questions in your conclusion.

6 Suggested writing schedule
Tuesday – By the end of class, have your theme and examples with cinematic techniques that reflect your theme.  Wednesday – Write your introduction and thesis sentence. Thursday – Complete one body paragraph. Friday – Complete the other body paragraph and work on conclusion. Monday, 10/17 and Tuesday, 10/18 - Type your essay. Essay is due on Thursday, 10/20 3rd period is on a different schedule. Type on Friday and Monday but same due date.
