How can I help my child become a better reader?
Read, read, read……and read some more!! Research proves that when children read and are read to daily, their comprehension, vocabulary, and oral language is increased dramatically. Students have access to Myon at home and school. Five Finger Retell focusing with Beginning, Middle, and End
7
Book Room Books Small group reading instruction takes place using books from our school’s book room. These are books specifically designed for reading instruction. Students are allowed to take these books home to practice as long as they are returned in good condition. It is essential that students spend time reading in easy to read, known books to develop their skills and confidence as readers. These books are expensive and run anywhere from $5.00 a book to $ a set, so please treat them carefully and return them promptly to your child’s teacher. We recommend that you take the books out of the backpack, read them, and then return them to the backpack to make sure they are returned daily to the classroom.

Writing: Phonetic spelling conventional spelling
High frequency sight words Use Word Walls to help support spelling correctly Being a Writer program and Lucy Calkins

What should my child’s writing look like and how can I help?
Perfect spelling is not the goal!! Encourage students to write the letters for the sounds they hear. Make writing fun by writing back to your child in their Family Journals each weekend. It’s not the quantity, but the quality!
