INAR 342 FINISHING

INAR 342 : FINISHING Aim of the Course This course is designed to heighten the students understanding of the rules and principles of finishing for various building components, with reference to interior spaces. Basically three aspects of an interior space are covered: wall finishes, flooring, and ceiling.

Properties and implementation techniques of the following subjects will be explained: Wall Finishes plastering, painting, wall papers, plaster boards, timber boards, stones, pressed bricks, ceramic tiles, wall partitions Flooring screeds, terrazzo, ceramic tiling, wood blocks, parquet, and wood boards... Ceiling moulded ceilings, bench works and suspended ceilings.

Methodology/Classroom Procedures Each week a specific subject matter will be lectured during the first 2 hours of the class meeting. In the remaining part of the class hours, the student is required to complete a given exercise, which is normally related to the topic of the week. The student is expected to complete the studio exercise independently in the studio, while the instructors provide regular critique to her/him. If the studio exercise can not be completed during the studio hours, the student can submit the exercise untill the beginning of the next course.

Studio Drawing Exercises There will be weekly, drawing exercises for the course Finishing to be completed by each student every week, in the second part of the class, following the lecture part which normally lasts two hours from the beginning of the class meeting. Each of the design exercises (DE) is normally related to the subject that is covered in the lecture part of the class.

It is required that all of the design exercises of a student relate to the same building, which will be called here and then MASTER BUILDING. For this reason the student is required to select or develop a MASTER BUILDING of his own during the first two weeks of the semester.

The requirements that the MASTER BUILDING should fulfill are outlined below: Any design thats either previously done by the student as a course requirement, or borrowed from any source of book, magazine or builder is acceptable as long as it fulfills these requirements

Requirements for the Proposed Master Building Maximum dimensions of a floor (width and length) : – 14 – 20 Mt. Max. no of floors : 1 Practical purpose (function of bld) : – - hotel suit – - apartment house / single family house – - exhibition hall with storage, and wc units – - cocktail / dining hall with storage, and wc units – - social club house with storage, and wc units – - commercial building (shop, small office)

Requirements The requirements of the course include attendance to weekly lectures, studio exercises, midterm and final exams. The student must attend 80% of the weekly, class meetings, otherwise she/he may be dismissed of rights to be evaluated for the course. Accordingly, failure to attend the classes more than 3 times will result in receiving NG grade.
