2 Essay: To what extent were the Nazis successful in their policy of Gleichschaltung(co-ordination) after 1933? KEY TERMS: Gleichschaltung Totalitarian Länder Trade Union German Labour Front (DAF) Learning Objective: To research how Hitler brought into line different German institutions in 1933. To consider how far Hitler had created a totalitarian dictatorship. Learning Outcomes: Grade 6/7 You have a detailed knowledge of Gleichschaltung. Your essay structure is well developed with clear sections and linking paragraphs. You analyse how successful the Nazis were. You will extend your knowledge with extra reading. Grade 4 You can describe how key institutions were co-ordinated along Nazi lines. You show you are beginning to consider the structure of your essay and use some key terms correctly. Grade 5 You can describe in some detail the different ways the Nazis brought the institutions into line. Your written answers are logically structured, but not fully developed. Your answer will be more descriptive than analytical.

4 ACTIVATE: How did Hitler increase his power immediately after becoming Chancellor?
On your desk you should have a pack of cards with details about the events immediately after Hitler is made Chancellor. In your groups, sort the cause cards into chronological order: 5 minutes – quick task!

5 What happened after Hitler became Chancellor?
30th January 1933 – Hitler is appointed as Chancellor 27th February 1933 – Reichstag Fire 28th February 1933 – Emergency Decree passed 5th March 1933 – Elections 21st March 1933 – Day of Potsdam 23rd March 1933 – Enabling Law passed 14th July 1933 – All political opposition to the NSDAP is declared illegal 30th June 1934 – The Night of the Long Knives 2nd August 1934 – Hindenburg dies.

6 How much did each event help to increase Hitler’s power?
EXTENSION TASK: How did Hitler increase his power immediately after becoming Chancellor? Sort the cards into a DIAMOND NINE. Now you are choosing the most important event: CHALLENGE. Can you identify where these events LINK TOGETHER? (Where do they affect or lead into each other?) You could write them on paper and place the paper between the cards. What problems do you think Hitler might face after March 1933 and the Enabling Act? What exactly did the Enabling Act say? Who might still be a problem/challenge for Hitler? What actions might Hitler take? What does Hitler want to achieve? Why had Hitler not yet got a totalitarian dictatorship?

Task Two: To what extent were the Nazis successful in their policy of Gleichschaltung(co-ordination) after 1933? Your task is to write an essay on the question above. SUCCESS CRITERIA Your essay must include: Information on the following areas; Local government Trade Unions Political Parties and the Church Accurate and relevant knowledge giving specific examples. Explanation of how each area was brought into line and how this helped Hitler establish control over Germany. Each member of your group has been given an important role to play in writing your essay. You can always help each other, but you must make sure your own jobs are completed! The essay task has been split into 3 manageable ‘chunks’. Spend 10 minutes completing your job for each. Work as a team & stick to timings. 30 minutes – critical thinking and inquiry task!

15 Key Terms Gleichschaltung – Bringing into line or co-ordination. Hitler wanted to make sure ALL bodies did things according to the Nazi way. Totalitarian – A system of government where power lies with one person and does not allow any opposition. Länder – The name given to German regional states. (This is a little bit like the Emirates within the UAE). Federal system – Each region has control over some of its own laws. This is similar to the UAE where Emirates have different laws. Trade Union – A body that represents the rights of the workers. German Labour Front (DAF) – A Nazi organization set up to replace all other trade unions.
