Rock-forming mineral Minerals that make up most of the Earth’s crust’s rocks Ex. Quartz, feldspar, mica, and hornesblend

granite A light colored rock that has high silica content
Ex silica=silicone and oxygen

basalt A dark colored rock that has a lower silica content than granite; ex. too small of crystals that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

grains Particles of minerals or other rocks Ex. Give the rock texture

Ex. Size, shape, and pattern of grains

Igneous Rock Forms from cooling of magma or lava
Ex. Magma underground and lava on Earth’s surface

Sedimentary Rock Forms when small particles of rocks and remains of plans and animals are pressed and cemented together Ex. Layers buried below the surface

Metamorphic Rock Forms when a rock is changed by heat and pressure or by chemical reactions Ex. Deep underground
