The Gospel of Isaiah Jason S. DeRouchie, PhD Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Theology Bethlehem College & Seminary Bethlehem Baptist Church, spring 2018

2 ISAIAH 52:1–12: Participate in the 2nd Exodus
I. The corporate response to God’s reign and salvation (52:1–6) A. The call for Jerusalem to wake up, strengthen herself, and dress like a priest (5:1) B. The call for Jerusalem to remove her fetters (5:2–6) II. The personal response to God’s reign and salvation (52:7–12) A. The messengers good news of God’s reign and salvation (5:7) B. The watchmen’s call to respond to God’s reign and salvation (5:8–12) 1. A call to rejoice (5:8–10) 2. A call to depart and be purified (5:11–12)

3 A call to depart and be purified (52:11–12)
The nature: A new exodus and pilgrimage The focus: Departure from a sphere (sin) and not a place (Babylon).

4 The people: The new priests of the Lord (52:1; cf. Num 1:50–51)
Isa 56:6–7.  And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it, and holds fast my covenant—7 these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Isa 66:20–21. And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD. 21 And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the LORD.

5 1 Pet 2:5, 9. You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ…. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 2 Cor 6:16–18. What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” (Cf. Lev 26:12; Ezek 37:27; Isa 52:11; 43:6)

6 The qualification: no haste or flight (52:12ab)
Exod 12:11, 33, 39. In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover…. 33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.” … 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves. The reason for the qualification: God is with them (52:12cd)
