7.2 Hardware 7.2.1 Storage Devices
Year 7 Computer Midhurst Rother College
2
STARTER Think of 3 questions that you may face in a test about input & output devices.
3
LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand what storage is.
Be able to suggest the best type of storage for different scenerios.
4
KEYWORD: Storage These are devices that let the computer store things for later. This could be programs/apps or files that we’ve made. There are lots of ways we can store these but we need to decide which is best depending on what we use it for.
5
CLASS DISCUSS Would computers work without secondary storage? THINK!
PAIR! SHARE!
6
There are many different types of storage and devices that can be used to store data that a computer can read from or write to. Can you think of any? Let’s explore the most common types of storage.
7
MAIN TYPES OF STORAGE Optical: Lasers read and write data using light.
Magnetic: Mechanical parts move over the disk's surface to read and write data magnetically. Solid State: Data is recorded onto solid memory chips without any moving parts.
9
YOUR TASK Research the main differences between MAGNETIC, OPTICAL and SOLID STATE memory. Write notes into OneNote on a new page titled ‘Secondary Storage’. EXTENSION: Add these key terms to your revision cards. Can you think of any questions that we help you test yourself later on? COMPLETE IN YOUR ONENOTE 15MIN TASK
10
DEVICE: Hard Drive Advantages and disadvantages of device: CAPACITY
Varies but 2Tb+ is most common. DURABILITY Good as inside the computer. PORTABILITY Isn’t as is inside the computer. COST One of the cheapest for space you get.
11
DEVICE: External Hard Drive Advantages and disadvantages of device:
CAPACITY Varies but 1Tb+ is now commonplace. DURABILITY Can be damaged as portable, often break if dropped. PORTABILITY Very, just carry it with you. COST More expensive than normal hard drives but still cheaper than many.
12
DEVICE: Memory Cards Advantages and disadvantages of device: CAPACITY
64Gb+ DURABILITY Very durable, no moving parts PORTABILITY Very portable, small and light COST More expensive for space you get than others
13
DEVICE: Memory Sticks Advantages and disadvantages of device: CAPACITY
2Gb+ DURABILITY Very durable but USB port can break PORTABILITY Very portable, small and light COST More expensive for space you get than others
14
DEVICE: Optical Disc Advantages and disadvantages of device: CAPACITY
CD: 650Mb DVD: 4.74Gb, BluRay: 25-50Gb DURABILITY Very durable unless scratched PORTABILITY Very portable, need a reader to get data COST More expensive for space than some but cheaper than memory sticks / cards
15
YOUR TASK Open the worksheet in the Lesson 2 assignment from rother-net.co.uk. Remember to save the document into your files! Complete all tasks, there are factsheets for each type of storage on pages following the task to help you. Extension For each device find two examples you could buy online and how expensive they are, then rank the devices from cheapest to most expensive. COMPLETE ON WORD DOC PROVIDED 10MIN TASK
16
LEARNING CHECK Add questions about storage devices to the front of your revision cards. Add your answers to the back of the cards. The teacher will select one student to ask a question and one other student to answer that question.
17
NEXT LESSON We will look at the ‘brains’ of a computer.
