2 Media Representations of Age
Print - Popular media as well as psychological texts focus on “problems of aging” Fiction - Stories are usually of elderly being taken advantage of; children’s literature, use of words “old” “little” “ancient” in 85% of descriptions T.V. & Film - Most people are young and good-looking; older people are not visible in proportion to their presence in the actual population. Elderly tend to be stereotypical, “past prime.” The Simpsons – episode in which Grandpa escapes from a nursing home, but gets scared and goes back inside

3 Media Representations of Age (2)
Advertising: Americans try to deny that they are growing old; media and business then exploit this denial to sell products. Thus when advertisers appeal to the “gray market” of older consumers, they present idealized images of good health and vigorous activity. Anti-aging products abound. Generally notable absence – some exceptions However, there is another perception that older adults are a prosperous, selfish, politically powerful group using up societal resources.
