Vocabulary List 1 Auschwitz (noun)- a Nazi concentration camp located in SW Poland Sheik (noun)- in Islamic countries, the patriarch of a tribe or family; chief: a term of polite address Textile (noun)- any cloth or goods produced by weaving, knitting, or felting. Dowry (noun)- the money, goods, or estate that a wife brings to her husband at marriage Communist (noun)- a person supporting the Communist party (a political movement inspired by Karl Marx and the idea that the poor should revolt against the wealthy to create a society of shared material goods) Sanitarium (noun)- an institution for the preservation or recovery of health, especially for convalescence; health resort.

Vocabulary List 1 Caesura- A break or pause within a line of poetry indicated by punctuation and used to emphasize meaning. Monologue- A speech given by one character. EX. Hamlet's "To be or not to be..." Aphorism- A concise statement that expresses succinctly a general truth or idea, often using rhyme or balance. Dialect- A variety of speech characterized by its own particular grammar or pronunciation, often associated with a particular geographical region. Dissonance- Harsh, inharmonious, or dicordant sounds.

Homily- A sermon or moralistic lecture.
Invective- An intensely vehement, highly emotional verbal attack. Litotes- A type of understatement in which an idea is expressed by negating its opposite. (describing a particularly horrific scene by saying "It was not a pretty picture.) Pedantic- Characterized by an excessive display of learning or scholarship. Surrealism- An artistic movement emphasizing the imagination and characterized by incongruous juxtapositions and lack of conscious control.

Character Log For Maus, you will create a character log.
We will periodically work together on analyzing the characters. Take out three sheets of paper. Title one Vladek and one Art. On the third piece of paper, draw a line down the middle. On one side title it Anja and on the other side title it Mala.
