Why did John write 1 John? John is telling us over and over again in his letter how we can have joyful fellowship with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
10
(#1) To join him in this ongoing and joyful fellowship.
Why did John write 1 John? 1 John 1:1-4 (NIV84) 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 1:2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. 1:4 We write this to make our joy complete. (#1) To join him in this ongoing and joyful fellowship.

Why did John write 1 John? 1 John 2:1-2 (NIV84) 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have One who speaks to the Father in our defense —Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. (#2) The best route to not sinning is to come into partnership with the sinner’s Advocate, Jesus Christ.

Why did John write 1 John? 1 John 2:7-8 (NIV84) 2:7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 2:8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in Him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. (#3 & #4) God’s commandment to love one another is rooted in the Old Covenant and renewed by Jesus in the New Covenant.

14
Why did John write 1 John? 15

1 John 2:15-17 (NIV84) 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 2:16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. 2:17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
31

The evil one is at war with God.
1 John 5:19 (NIV84) 5:19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. The evil one is at war with God.
37
John 17:14-19 (NIV84) 14 I have given them Your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify Myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
