Organelle Notes Terms You Need to Know and Understand ©2015HappyEdugator
2
Cells are the basic unit of life.
The Cell Theory states that: All organisms are made up of one or more cells and the products of those cells. 2) All cells carry out life activities ( require energy, grow, have a limited size). 3) New cells arise only from other living cells by the process of cell division. ©2015HappyEdugator
3
Control center of the cell. Chromosome
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION Nucleus Control center of the cell. Chromosome (chromatin) are found in the nucleus ©2015HappyEdugator
4
FUNCTION NUCLEAR MEMBRANE
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION NUCLEAR MEMBRANE SURROUNDS & PROTECTS THE NUCLEUS. Allows movement of some substances into the nucleus. ©2015HappyEdugator
5
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION Cell Membrane Surrounds the cell. Protects, allows/controls movement of substances in to and out of the cell ©2015HappyEdugator
6
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION CELL WALL GIVES SUPPORT TO PLANT CELLS and many single-celled organisms. Contains cellulose. ©2015HappyEdugator
7
PICTURE Chloroplast Present in all plant cells that make food. Contains chlorophyll that enables the cell to make food. ©2015HappyEdugator
8
Cytoplasm PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION
Jelly-like material which holds all the organelles between the cell membrane and the nucleus ©2015HappyEdugator
9
PICTURE Mitochondrion Powerhouse of the cell. Sausage shaped with accordion folded membrane inside. Site of respiration. Energy is stored and released as needed. ©2015HappyEdugator
10
PICTURE Ribosome Found along the edges of the membrane in ER. They assemble proteins for export to the Golgi bodies ©2015HappyEdugator
11
Endoplasmic reticulum
PICTURE Endoplasmic reticulum Transport system of the cell. Protein is assembled here for export to the Golgi bodies. Made of folded membrane. ©2015HappyEdugator
12
ROUND, MOSTLY CLEAR STORAGE STRUCTURE.
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION VACUOLES ROUND, MOSTLY CLEAR STORAGE STRUCTURE. Contains water & dissolved minerals ©2015HappyEdugator
13
PICTURE Lysosomes Organelle which digest waste, worn out cell parts, and food molecules. Quickly breaks down a cell when it dies. Thin membrane protects a healthy cell from the digestive acids. ©2015HappyEdugator
14
GOLGI BODIES OR APPARATUS
PICTURE ORGANELLE FUNCTION GOLGI BODIES OR APPARATUS PROTEINS ARE PACKAGED AND STORED HERE for export when needed outside the cell. ©2015HappyEdugator
15
PICTURE Chromosomes Thread-like strands of DNA found in the nucleus. Determines the traits of the cell. ©2015HappyEdugator
