Joyful learner…. Helping my students to learn…
Bring survey, ipad connector
2
To help my students learn, I should:
Know my students Use the most effective teaching and learning strategy Assess and give feedback on how my students learn
3
Learning is complex and powerful ….
It changes what our students know, understand and are able to do…. And, therefore, changes who they are, their identity – how they see themselves and how others see them… You cannot claim to be a teacher, unless your students learn! Do you agree with the last statement?
4
Therefore, a key starting point is knowing your students:
Knowing their pre-existing knowledge and skills Knowing their interests, dispositions and aptitudes Knowing about any pastoral care issues which may have an impact on their learning Knowing what types of learning they enjoy Know my students How do you get to know students – especially in large classes? Is learning always a joy? IN ADVANCE OF NEXT SLIDE: How wide is your professional repertoire? List teaching techniques.
5
Use the most effective teaching and learning strategy
It is important to know how students learn in order choose the most effective teaching strategy from your professional repertoire: Sometimes rote learning Sometimes a didactic exposition Sometimes group work Sometimes supporting active learning… We need to model these for our student teachers Use the most effective teaching and learning strategy (FROM PREVIOUS) How wide is your professional repertoire? THIS SLIDE: How can we model these for student teachers?
6
Assess and give feedback on how students learn
We need to share the success criteria and to assess what learning has taken place – to get inside the ‘black box’ (our students’ heads, Black and McWilliams, 1998) Summative Assessment – can be efficient in providing a grade/mark/label but can be too late, if they have misunderstood. Formative Assessment – an ongoing conversation (feedback and feed-forward too) about learning, between a student and their teacher … Assess and give feedback on how students learn Is sit always good to share success criteria? Feed-forward too??
