4 Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

5 Receive The time came for Elizabeth to have her baby, and she gave birth to a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard how wonderfully good the Lord had been to her, and they all rejoiced with her. When the baby was a week old, they came to circumcise him, and they were going to name him Zechariah, after his father. But his mother said, "No! his name is to be John." They said to her, "But you have no relatives with that name!". Continues on next slide…

6 Receive Then they made signs to his father, asking him what name he would like the boy to have. Zechariah asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." How surprised they all were! At that moment Zechariah was able to speak again, and he started praising God. The neighbours were all filled with fear, and the news about these things spread through all the hill country of Judea. Continues on next slide …

7 Receive Everyone who heard of it thought about it and asked, "What is this child going to be?" For it was plain that the Lord’s power was upon him. The child grew and developed in body and spirit. He lived in the desert until the day when he appeared publicly to the people of Israel. From the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 1, verses 57 to 66 and 80

8 Engage John the Baptist was like an Old Testament prophet, encouraging the people of God to live lives worthy of their calling and telling them about the coming of the Anointed One. In the tradition of the early Christian teachers, John was seen as having the grace of God from before his birth, and consequently the Church has always kept the celebration of this day with greater significance than that of his death.

9 Engage Video suggestion … The story of the birth of John the Baptist
Some discussion ideas … John means “God is gracious”, does your name have a meaning? Why do some families name children with a meaning? John was not afraid to speak out. Who do you know how is not afraid to speak out? What do you think gives them the strength to do so? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections.

10 Respond [Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] Almighty God, by whose providence your servant John the Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of your Son our Saviour by the preaching of repentance: lead us to repent according to his preaching and, after his example, constantly to speak the truth, boldly to rebuke vice, and patiently to suffer for the truth's sake. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …

11 Go out into the world with the light of Christ
Let us bless the Lord Thanks be to God Go out into the world with the light of Christ
