EMBRACE THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
2
Crises… Plastics in the environment
Littering Poor infrastructure No end of life ownership Illegal activities Unrecyclable and/or unrecycled plastic packaging Inappropriate material Poor design Lack of technology Unnecessary packaging Linear Economics Cost burden placed elsewhere (municipalities) Imbedded corporate interests Recycling as a band aid
3
Opportunity… Circular Economics Recycling as circular Global alliances
Design out waste Relook at plastic packaging design(s) from scratch Choose appropriate packaging material Look at alternative supply and revers logistic supply chains Extended Producer Responsibility Create aligned EPR system in SA with common goals, focus and economies of scale Recycling as circular Design and use materials that can be reused at the same level of technical/nutrient cycle (bottle to bottle, fibre to fibre, film to film etc) Invest in technology, systems, infrastructure to improve recycled content (quality, availability, uses). Global alliances Not a uniquely South African issue But SA industry missing from the alliances (WW did join New Plastics Economy Global Commitment - #lineinthesand) European Plastic Pact etc
4
Industry… 43,7% plastic packaging collected for recycling
2017 recycling rates (top 4 polymers) LDPE = 34% PET = 22% HDPE = 20% PP = 15% Industry Waste Management Plan Obligatory EPR Increased awareness Industry Collaboration (including brand owners) Existing EPR – voluntary PETCO POLYCO PSA Plastics|SA sustainability division Recycling Day World Clean up Week
