1
Rocks of our Earth
2
Which layer are we living on?
On the continents on part of/top of the CRUST Crust made of ROCKS. (the crust rocks!) Land/ Ground= a Lot of Granite Ocean floor = a lot of basalt
3
TYPES OF ROCKS Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic
3 major groups named for how they are FORMED Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic
4
IGNEOUS ROCKS Formed from cooling of molten material Lava (land) Ash
Magma (mantle)
5
TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS BASALT GRANITE (Lava formed)
Most common igneous rx (Magma formed)
6
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS Sediments: Pebbles Sand & silt Clay Shells & bones
Made of layers of sediments that have been pressed or cemented together Sediments: Pebbles Sand & silt Clay Shells & bones Sediments deposited by wind & water
7
TYPES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
Shale Coal Limestone forms mainly from plant debris composed of calcium carbonate. Forms from the accumulation of shell, coral, algal & fecal debris Sandstone
8
METAMORPHIC ROCKS changed by intense heat & pressure inside Earth
“Meta” ~ means change (Greek) “Morphosis” ~ means form (Greek) changed by intense heat & pressure inside Earth Igneous, sedimentary, & even metamorphic rocks can be changed into different metamorphic rocks

10
ROCK CYCLE The rock cycle is a never-ending process of rocks: *forming
*weathering *changing into other rocks
11
Anything can happen in the Rock Cycle
Type of Rock What Happens?? New Rock Formed igneous subjected to heat & pressure metamorphic re-melted sedimentary weathered & eroded sedimentary heated enough to melt weathered and eroded
