4 Definition of Pun Definition of Pun
Puns are verbal word plays that poke fun at words that sound the same but have different meanings. In order to create a pun the author has to have a strong vocabulary with the ability to twist words into various meanings. Romeo and Juliet (Act I scene IV) Mercutio: “Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance.” Romeo: “Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes/ With nimble soles; I have a soul of lead So stakes me to the ground I cannot move.”
