2 Who Gets the Power?

3 Unitary Power is held by one central authority which controls the weaker regional authorities (states/provinces) Power is not shared between states, counties, or provinces Ex: Great Britain, China, Most African Countries, most countries in the world

5 Unitary Government Authority

6 Unitary Governments

7 Confederation A weak or loose organization of regional authorities (states/provinces) agree to follow a strong central authority or not to follow a weak central authority Ex: Confederate States of America

8 Confederation Government

9 Confederation Government

10 U.S. as a Confederation U.S. was a confederation in the beginning.
It was too weak! We changed to federal with the constitution.

11 Federal Power is divided or shared between one central authority and regional authorities (states, counties, provinces) Regional authorities are given self- rule normally through their own legislatures Ex: United States

12 President Barack Obama
Federal (Federal) President Barack Obama (State) Governor Nathan Deal (Local) Mayor Kaseem Reed

14 Federal Government Authority

15 Countries with Federal Governments

16 How do Citizens Participate?

17 Autocracy A single person has complete power
and citizens have little or no power

18 Autocracy Disadvantages Advantages Things get done quicker
Good leader could make good decisions (think of King Arthur) Bad decision made by one person. The citizens do not have a say. One person cannot be an expert at everything!!!

19 Oligarchy A few people have complete power and usually use it for corrupt or selfish reasons, and citizens have little or no power

20 Oligarchy Disadvantages Advantages
More people to make decisions than Autocracy. Decisions are still made pretty quickly. People still do not get a say Greed=bad rulers

21 Democracy The control is put in the hands of the citizens normally exercised through the voting process

22 Democracy Disadvantages Advantages The people get a say (Voting)
More people can be experts. If your leaders make a bad decision, replace your leaders. Decisions take longer to make. Stupid voters=stupid decisions. What the majority of people want is not always right!

23 What is the difference between Presidential and Parliamentary Democracy?

24 Main difference between Presidential and Parliamentary.
Presidential-Checks and Balances and President is voted on directly by the people. Parliamentary-People vote for legislature and legislature votes for the leader. (indirect)

25 Presidential Democracy
Executive Branch Legislative Branch Judicial Branch President – Elected by the people Senators-Elected by the people. Representatives-Elected by the people. Supreme Justices-Appointed by President and confirmed by the legislative branch In all these position, the people are elect their representative.

26 Parliamentary Democracy
Legislature The power of the government is not divided into branches. The members of the legislature are elected by the people. The party that has control of the legislature selects the leader. The legislature is given the “supreme” power of government by the people. The people do not get to elect the leader.
