13 Reading and Presentation
Paper from the reading list or top conferences To be added (course website) For each paper (several papers per topic) I define the main theme and ask you to read papers One team: pick the paper and present it (15-20 min presentation) The other team: criticize the paper The rest should read the paper in advance: Q&A + discussion Signup in advance, each one needs to present 2+ papers and criticize 2+ papers Presentation tips (see next slide and webpage) In paper presentation and critiques, you should present the following summary (next slide) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

14 How to summarize a paper?
At least 4 items of 3 strong points: 3 most important things stated by the paper Could be combination of motivations, observations, interesting designs, or clever implementations (1) from the author’s perspective at the time; (2) your perspective with the benefit of hindsight One or more weakness: what is the single most glaring deficiency? Design flaws, poorly designed experiments, narrow-scoped main idea, weak applicability, … Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

15 More on paper summary One key assumption/observation that led to the research What were the key observations? Where did the observation/assumption come from? Personal experience, or work environment, … One key risk/obstacle What are they to prevent the research from successful? Were the authors aware of them? Are these obstacles eventually overcome? 16 Critique/summary 1-page (at most 2-page) critique
Two papers from the list Each student picks any <strong>two</strong> papers from <a href="reading.html"> the listing </a> or other top conferences (please let me know the papers you choose in advance). They must be different from the ones selected for your presentation. 1-page critique is recommended (no more than 2 pages) for one paper. Note: if the selected paper has been presented by others before, a higher-quality critique is expected. Due: <a href = "#"> Mar 23 </a> (next week after spring break), but the sooner the better.
