3 Objective Students will be able to create models of molecules to represent their structure and chemical make-up.

4 What is a molecule? A molecule is a group of atoms bonded together.
Molecules represent the smallest unit of a compound. Examples would be a single molecule (or single unit) of water, sugar, or salt.

5 Molecules When we are talking about molecules, we can put a number in front of a chemical formula to show how many molecules there are. We call this number a coefficient. Example: 6 H2O means 6 molecules of water Since each molecule has 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom, then 6 H2O means that we have a total of 12 hydrogen atoms, and 6 oxygen atoms.

You will be working with a partner! Follow along as we go through the packet together to make sure you understand directions. A large part of the grade for this activity will be how well you follow the directions and complete the activity in order.

15 Review A molecule is a group of atoms bonded together.
Molecules represent the smallest unit of a compound. A chemical formula tells you what is in a compound (the ingredients). The small numbers in the formula tell you how many atoms there are of each element.

17 Making Molecules Use the remaining time to complete your molecules using the pipe cleaners and beads. When you are finished, go back to your seat and answer the questions on the last page. If you find the questions difficult, use your notes and try your hardest! Persevere through the challenges and give good, scientific explanations!

How are oxygen and ozone different? 6. Salt (NaCl) is made of sodium, a very reactive, gray metal, and chlorine, a toxic, greenish-yellow gas. What can you conclude about what happens to atoms when they form molecules?
