So what do tourists need for a location to work as a tourist destination???
Pairwork: create a list of all things a location needs to attract tourists to visit. Share these with the rest of your table Can you categorise them into groups. Draw a spider diagram in your books to record this info – we will be adding more information later so leave enough room. I suggest you use a double page.

From our lists of Tourist requirements – generate a list of jobs/employment that are related to tourism. Think of as many as you can. Here’s one job for free! Add this employment info on to your spider diagram.

Is tourism always a good thing for a town or city? Pair Work: Sort these into positives and negatives of tourism Lots of jobs are created Boats and vehicles create noise pollution Streets become crowded Jobs are available only in the summer months People get to know new places Facilities such as public toilets are improved People can learn a new language The culture of the place can be changed Shops are built to cater for tourists Tourists drop litter Many local people rely on tourist related jobs only. A local government are considering whether to promote and develop tourism for a small seaside town. They have employed you to advise them on what conflict(s) might occur with the local population. Using what you learnt from both the card sorting exercise and your conflict matrix, write a short paragraph explaining what you believe to be the two biggest potential conflicts if they where to go ahead. Ext Challenge: Can you offer them advice on how they might minimise these potential conflicts?
