In the presence of a dysbiotic gut microbiota, the mRNA expression of the GLP-1 receptor (GLP1R) and of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) are downregulated in enteric neurons, thereby reducing NO production and downstream stimulation of the afferent vagus nerve. In the absence of such stimulation, the physiological effects of GLP-1 depending on a functional gut-brain axis, gastric emptying, and insulin secretion are impaired.
