The Mental Game The tempo and skill levels encountered at higher competitive levels place mental, as well as physical, demands on game officials The best officials are not only physically fit, but are psychologically sound as well A positive mental outlook is an acquired skill gained from: Lessons learned from game experience Mental preparation "Chance favors those who prepare"

Rule book/Casebook Officiating Manuals Watch other officials work whenever possible Evaluating other officials can improve your own game Establish a regular pre-game routine

Communicate Concentrate and focus Anticipate -- read the play Know and react to important calls See the potential range of events Wait before reacting Judge events on relevance Allow the game to be played Maintain a “healthy” confidence
