Warm Up #1 How do you think you did on Thursday’s test? What questions did you have trouble with? What are the planets in the Solar System? How do you think the planets were formed?
2
“What is Environmental Science”
Geology Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geobiology Paleontology Oceanography Meteorology Astronomy Group of sciences Describe Earth and...Space
3
X (you are here) Meteorology: 1. Astronomy:
Weather, Climate, & Atmosphere. 1. Astronomy: Study of the Universe X (you are here)
4
Where are We? Earth is one of 8 planets Earth Revolves around the Sun
Moon revolves around Earth Sun + Planets = Solar System
5
Where did Earth Come From?...
6
The Nebular Hypothesis
Everything in our Solar System came from a HUGE, spinning, cloud of dust & gas. Hypothesis?... Nebula?... “Nebula” = Cloud of dust & gas in Space
7
Nebular Hypothesis: Nebula spun really fast Flattened
Dust squishes together in middle Forms SUN Other Solids squish together and form planets
8
1. Nebula 2. Spins… 3. Sun! 4. Planets!
9
Earth’s Layers Layers! Lighter Material = Outside Planets
Heavier Material = Inner Planets After Earth formed, interior melted heavier elements sink to middle ↓ lighter elements float to surface ↑ Layers!
10
Mariana Trench Earth’s Deepest Trench VERY COLD, HIGH PRESSURE
Lowest point – vent species (molten hot) Where is heat coming from?
11
Quick Quiz #1 What are the five steps of the Nebular Hypothesis?
Where are the heavier rocks found on Earth? How does this differ from the lighter rocks? Why do you think the rocks arrange themselves in the way described in #2?
12
ASSIGNMENT: 6 Frames. 6 captions.
Create a COMIC POSTER: (15 pts) Use page 4 of Text 6 Frames. 6 captions. 6 COLOR drawings that illustrate each phase of Nebular Hypothesis DUE: TOMORROW 6 pts = Captions 6 pts = Illustrations…use color!!! 3 pts = Effort
13
Spins! Flattens… ? Sun! Planets.
