Exploring Implementation Dips and Strategies: Leadership - Tree
This is a great video about leadership! Watch the video as a group and the next slide will lead the group through an activity based on this video.
5
Activity – Pair Share Talk to your neighbor and discuss the following:
What was the problem? What got in the way of solving the problem? How does the video connect to the implementation dips you may be experiencing? We’ll hear a sampling of your responses as a large group….

Common Implementation Dips
Implementation too loosely defined Implementation not managed well Results are poor or are not known The implementation has lost momentum after some period of initial enthusiasm. These dips were highlighted by Susan Barrett at the Implementation Science Leadership Launch. They are also discussed in the book – Keeping RtI on Track: How to Identify, Repair and Prevent Mistakes that Derail Implementation by Amanda VanDerHeyden and W. David Tilly III. These dips are not specific to PBIS and can be noticed in the implementation of any innovation. Here we will discuss applicability to PBIS.

Keeping RTI on Track: How to Identify, Repair and Prevent Mistakes That Derail Implementation By Amanda M. VanDerHeyden and W. David Tilly III
8
#1 Implementation too loosely defined
Strategies: Define and design all efforts within a multi-tiered framework Organize your system using this logic Use the same prevention and intervention procedures for both behavior and academic Create consistent “decision rules” for problem solving and solution finding Define PBIS within your cultural context and in a way that everyone can understand. It is important to simply define PBIS (or other innovation) within the three tiered logic framework. Create visuals so people can understand Universal, Targeted and Intensive Level interventions. Your leadership teaming structure should be built on the three tiered logic. One leadership team can address both academic and behavior. The procedures and processes for screening, referral and evaluation should be the same.
9
#2 Implementation not managed well
Strategies: Administrator and leadership are key!!! Create an environment where people feel safe Use data tools and provide data information to others regularly Use Team meeting process (TIPS!!!) If you reflect back to the readiness checklist, one of the most important elements for readiness was that PBIS had to be one of the top three priorities of the school. It will always be a challenge if you start too many initiatives at the same time. Revisit the readiness checklist. What things do you need to work on? Administrator must play lead support rule for sustainability of PBIS. The administrator and team must develop a mindset that staff may need support instead of negative attention for not following through. Always ask – “How can I support you”? Focus on data as a way to sort through priorities. Share with staff, make changes based on analysis of data. Use data to prioritize one thing at a time. Don’t try to change all things at once. Remember the mantra – “what is the least thing that can be done to make the biggest impact?” TIPs will help you feel like you are managing this work in a controllable manner.
10
#3 Results are poor or are not known
Strategies: Create effective and efficient data systems and reporting mechanisms! Understand your data so you can use it for change and explain it to others Share your data with others! Market it!!! Having an organized data system that you are confident in can go a long way toward addressing all these implementation dips. First, create a data system you believe is accurate. This is a big priority. Then, learn how to query it so you can produce reports that are readable and understandable to others. Then, use the data for decisions. Non-example: At a large school leadership team meeting, the group broke into groups to examine the big five data reports by grades. There were lots of comments and discussion was rich. Then the meeting ended and no one made any attempt to plan what to do about their observations.
11
#4 The implementation has lost momentum after some period of initial enthusiasm
Strategies: Use data - To survey staff perceptions (SAS) To reward staff and student performance To celebrate success! To narrow scope of focus (hallways, cafeteria) Take a break between “roll-outs” Acknowledge incremental successes along the way Again, use your data. BoQ and SAS important measures to share.
12
Activity – Small Group In small groups identify one or two implementation dips. Share your challenges and strategies. We’ll hear a sampling of your responses as a large group….

Current Topics of Interest
Bullying Prevention and Intervention Universal Screening Trauma Informed Schools Mindfulness Practices The following is a list of current topics of interest. The following slides will introduce strategies and resources to address each topic as well as lead with an opening discussion question.
14
Bullying Prevention and Intervention
Discussion: How is PBIS helping your bullying prevention and intervention efforts? (Complete Survey) Strategies and Resources: Bully Prevention in PBIS Stopbullying.gov -- the Federal Government's clearinghouse for information, resources, and practical strategies for various stakeholders related to bullying prevention A short paper survey will be handed out at this time gathering information about bullying prevention and intervention efforts. This information will be used to help us plan future training opportunities around this topic. Please remember to collect this survey!

Universal Screening Discussion: Strategies and Resources:
What is your experience using Universal Screening to identify students in need and match to interventions? Strategies and Resources: Bristol and Dothan Brook Archived Webinar, Workshop at the Summer Institute Kathleen Lane’s Book: Systematic Screening of Behavior to Support Instruction Example of a social screen: Pass around the student list. Ask teachers to Bristol uses the SSBD in the fall to screen all students. What they discovered is that students that were identified using the SSBD were not necessarily being identified in SWIS. Similarly, students with several ODRs in SWIS were not being identified using the the SSBD screening tool. Bristol formed a team to gather more data and problem-solve around these students. They would be a great resource if interested in learning more about Universal Screening. In addition, check out our most recent archived Universal Screening Webinar found at

Mindfulness Practices
Discussion: What’s your interest in incorporating mindfulness practices in your school? Strategies and Resources: South Burlington SD What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is exploring a number of paths leading to peace of mind and relaxing in the present moment Research supports the value of mindfulness in schools. It indicates that healthy decision-making and resiliency develop from a foundation of self-awareness and self-regulation; and shows that these, in turn, are strengthened through the use of reflective practices. We know that resiliency is crucial to health and learning and is increasingly embraces by the greater business community as essential to creativity and productivity, and research has shown practices such mindfulness can ehlp build that resiliency and wellness in our children. IMPORTANT: You cannot force anyone to experience something like mindfulness. You have to let them become comfortable with it and not expect them to do it on one’s say so. Examples: Body scan Three minute breathing space

This book is compiled by the South Burlington SD about Mindfulness Practices. They are conducting a mindfulness strand at the BEST/MTSS Summer Institute this year!

SAS and BoQ Reminder! The SAS Window is currently open! It closes on March 31st! The BoQ Window will open April 1st and close on May 31st! SAS REMINDER: The window to complete the SAS is now open and will close on March 31, It is an expectation that all PBIS schools participate in this important annual assessment. If you haven’t already done so, please schedule at time for your staff to complete this survey. The SAS is a great tool for identifying staff priorities and evaluating staff buy-in! BoQ REMINDER: On April 1st the window to complete your annual Benchmarks of Quality (BoQ) assessment will open for two months. The window will close on May 31st. It is an expectation that school leadership teams complete this assessment. The BoQ helps schools identify areas of success and areas of improvement for the implementation of the Universal components of PBIS. The features include: PBIS Team, Faculty Commitment, Discipline Procedures, Data Entry & Analysis, Expectation, Recognition, Teaching, Implementation Plan, Classroom Systems and Evaluation.
