1 State of Georgia BASIC FIRE FIGHTER TRAINING COURSE
WATER SUPPLY

2 WATER SOURCES FOR FIRE FIGHTING
Municipal water systems Private water systems Natural supplies Manmade sources Water Supply

3 FIRE HYDRANTS Wet barrel Dry barrel Used in warm climates
Water is always in the barrel Operating nut at each outlet and on bonnet Dry barrel Used in cold climates (Georgia) Water not in barrel Operating nut on top of bonnet Water Supply

4 CONNECTING TO A FIRE HYDRANT 2½” Outlet
Take needed equipment Wrap hose one turn around hydrant Place foot on hose & signal driver to lay hose Place hydrant wrench on operating nut Remove caps from outlet(s) to be used Open hydrant to flush debris (10-20 sec.) Close hydrant Attach hose(s) to hydrant outlet facing fire Attach valve to not-used 2½” outlet Fully open hydrant on signal from pumper operator After use close hydrant Water Supply

5 HOSE LAYS Forward lay Female coupling off truck first Water Supply

6 HOSE LAYS Reverse lay Male coupling off truck first Water Supply

7 HYDRANT MAINTENANCE As required locally Obstructions to hydrant
Obvious damage Rust and corrosion Caps removable Hydrant operational Lubricate Water Supply

8 DRAFTING The process by which water is lifted by means of a vacuum from a static water source into a pump Water Supply

9 EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR DRAFTING
Pumper Hard suction hose Strainer Mallet Water Supply

10 A portable device that serves as a temporary reservoir for water
PORTABLE WATER TANK A portable device that serves as a temporary reservoir for water Folding Frame Self-supporting Water Supply

11 TRANSFERING WATER BETWEEN PORTABLE TANKS
Simple Siphon Method Utilizing a hard suction hose or other non-collapsible tube or pipe to allow water to flow from one portable tank to another by atmospheric pressure Water Supply

12 MOBILE WATER SUPPLY OPERATIONS
A method of transporting water from a water source to a fire attack apparatus by use of tankers, pumpers, or other apparatus Water Supply

13 MOBILE WATER SUPPLY OPERATIONS Procedure
Supply apparatus transports water to the fire attack pumper Supply apparatus off-loads water: Supply apparatus pumps directly into tank on pumper Pumper drafts directly from the supply apparatus Water off-loaded into portable tank After unloaded, supply apparatus goes to fill point Supply apparatus is filled with water Supply apparatus returns to fire attack pumper Cycle is repeated Water Supply

14 RELAY PUMPING OPERATION
A method of moving water a long distances by the use of two or more apparatus where as one apparatus pumps water to the next May be needed when the length of hose line from the water source to the attack apparatus is such that there is insufficient water/pressure to provide the required fire flow Water Supply

15 RELAY PUMPING OPERATION PROCEDURES
Apparatus are spaced from the incident to the water source Hose lines are laid from apparatus to apparatus Pumping apparatus sets up at the water source First Apparatus pumps from water source to the intake of the next pumper The second apparatus pumps to the next and so on The last apparatus will be operating at the scene Operation can consist of as few as two apparatus or as many as required Water Supply
