Prout is the abbreviation for the Progressive Utilization Theory, a new socio-economic model based on:
economic self-reliance;
cooperatives;
environmental balance; and
universal spiritual values.
President Hugo Chavez is calling for a “Socialism for the 21st Century”, but he admits he doesn’t know exactly what it should be. The founder of Prout, P.R. Sarkar, called Prout “progressive socialism”, and there is great interest among many Venezuelans to try these dynamic principles.

3. Ideal Leaders in Venezuela
P. R. Sarkar, founder of Prout, visited Venezuela in He said: “Venezuela needs good spiritual political leaders. If Venezuela can produce spiritual political leaders, it will be not only the leader of Latin America, but also the leader of the planet.”
Sarkar visited only one country in Latin America, Venezuela, from September 27-29, When he was leaving he gave a message of encouragement and hope to the people there. Throughout his life, whenever meeting with followers from different parts of Central and South America, he repeated the basic idea, urging each one to transform his or her country. He said, “Venezuela needs good spiritual political leaders. If Venezuela can produce spiritual political leaders, it will be not only the leader of Latin America, but also the leader of the planet. Venezuela is a blessed country. My sons and daughters, it is your duty to accelerate the process to create spiritual political leaders. I depend on you.”

6. MISSION
To empower all people to improve their quality of life and live in a more just society by fostering the development of worker cooperatives, self-reliant communities, environmental protection, universal ethics and spiritual values.
This is a legal not for profit foundation created to research about Prout and to practically help cooperatives.

7. Peace Conference

“The Art of Peace” Conference was organized by Venezuelan Defense Minister and Armed Forces Chief General Raúl Baduel in the Venezuelan Defense Ministry Auditorium, Caracas, on April It began with a beautiful Ecumenical Spiritual Celebration. Prout was given a keynote 30-minute presentation. In his invitation letter to Director Dada Maheshvarananda, the General wrote, ““Beloved friend… Your particular spiritual sensibility and self-denial for social service, make you an example to follow. I admire your zeal in spreading the kind ideas of Prout and, without doubt, your presentation will be an invaluable contribution for the development of this event dedicated to the theme of peace.”

Determining how closely they resemble a “model” cooperative.
With the help of Professor Carlos José Molina Camacho of the Central Venezuela University we created a cooperative survey to help us to determine how closely Venezuelan cooperatives resemble a “model” cooperative. We are interviewing 50 co-ops in the poor rural region of Barlovento. We developed more than 80 questions to diagnose the problems and needs these enterprises have. Many of the co-op workers have been surprised to see European and American researchers approach them, but nonetheless they kindly received us and generously gave their time in answering our questions.

9. Documentary “Another Life is Possible”

Family Acarya Narada Muni from Australia is coming for 3 weeks in July to film a 30-minute documentary called “Another Life is Possible” about how Venezuelan cooperatives are transforming the lives of people in Barlovento, and how PROUT intends to answer their needs and contribute to economic democracy. It will be produced in both Spanish and English versions.

10. Cooperative leadership training
Basic, intermediate, advanced and intensive courses.
Utilizing practical exercises, discussion, cooperative games.
Teach planning, effective decision making, overcoming stress, achieving goals, moral and spiritual values, and economic democracy.
These training courses will eventually provide a steady income for the Institute.

12. Proutist Forum Theater for Children and Adults
Actors present a real experience of exploitation.
Spectators invited to try responding in different ways.
Together create a better ending.
Discuss transforming our social reality.
Actively create alternative futures.
Developed by Augusto Boal (Brazil) “Theater of the Oppressed”.
This is a very empowering technique to stimulate activism.

13. Prout in Practice: Master Unit Community Center, 2 hr from Caracas
Didi Ananda Sadhana
The two-storey, 160 square-meter Community Center is located on three and a half hectares of agricultural land. Didi Ananda Sadhana began this project 7 years ago putting Prout into practice. A two-hour drive from Caracas, this model “Master Unit” serves the five nearest rural villages of Barlovento, which are very impoverished, through education, health, agriculture and cooperatives.

14. Sewing Cooperative and Sustainable Agriculture
For 3 years the sewing cooperative has provided income to five women. Hundreds of papaya, passion fruit, noni, mandarin trees produce fruits year round. Thousands of beautiful ripe mangos are harvested each year. Dried neem leaves are sold in health food stores, and organic vegetables are sold in the local market.

15. 25 beehives produce 300 kg/year of honey
All the honey is sold as “Vita Lotus”, a company registered by the Center to market its natural products.

16. Reading/Writing Program
Lending a children’s book each week to mothers to read to their children.
The Center lends children’s books to the parents of the villages to read to their young children. The purpose is to stimulate reading and writing, and to create positive attention activities in the families. Mothers sometimes come to the Center on a Saturday afternoon for a workshop on good parenting skills and self-esteem.

17. Financially supporting teenage mothers to complete their high school studies
The Center pays the study fees of young mothers who want to finish their high school education, but do not have access to government programs. Three are studying now, and 10 more are on the waiting list!
