1 Summary and key points from chapter 9 Book 2

2 Winston is exhausted from having worked almost a 90 hour workweek.
He and Julia are still seeing each other in charrington’s shop regardless of the consequences if they should be caught. Now they are no longer at war with Eurasia; they are at war with eastasia- a complete reversal of what it had been throughout the book. Hate Week still continued but now the target had changed. All the posters surrounding the area were wrong!!! Still showed they were at war with Eurasia. During the commotion of the tearing down of the posters, Winston received the “book” as O’Brien said he would. Winston, as he continues his job, is no longer worried that every word he uttered was a lie. As a result of his excellence in occupation, no one would be able to prove that the war with Eurasia had ever occurred

3 Parts of the book- Chapter 1- IgnoraNCe is strength-talks about how the land was divided into the parts that exist now. Also how the classes were divided- high, middle and low and that even back then how there were those who saw those “differences” as problems. Chapter 3- War is Peace- In some form or fashion, these three super states (eastasia, eurasisa and oceania) are always at war with one another- that is the constant. There is no real reason for the war- they book compares the war to raping- “war hysteria is continuous and universal in all countries and such acts as raping.” (p186) Progress can and will get out of hand- the progress was made, the more the differences between the classes was evident, “wealth in the sense of personal possessions and luxuries should be evenly distributed, while power remained ini the hands of a small privileged caste (group)” p. 190

4 The essential end game of war is destruction of the products of human labor- those that may in fact promote human intelligence and power. Warfare also increases production but not distribution of power and such. There is no word for “science” because science is based on thought- whoch is not allowed in ingsoc. The two aims of ingsoc are as follows: to conquer the whole surface of the earth and to extinguish once and for all the possibility of independent thought (p.193.) All three powers continue to produce atomic bombs and store them against the opportunity or chance that war will ensue sometime in the future (p.195) In the past “all rulers have tried to impose a false view of the world on their followers, but they could not afford to encourage any illusion that tended to impair military efficiency(p197).

5 Read from page 211-218- end of chapter 9
War is an internal affair- against its own subjects- to keep the structure of society intact. A peace that is truly permanent is much the same as a permanent war- because it is a constant state of being (p.199) History became predictable and since that was the case it was alterable. The invention of print made it easier to manipulate people’s opinion and film and radio helped with that idea. P.208- the consciousness of the masses only be influenced in a negative way and then control is given. P.209 End page 211. Read from page end of chapter 9
