3 SEARCHING AT INTERSECTIONS
WHICH ZONES SHOULD YOU CHECK AS YOU ARE APPROACHING?? LEFT FRONT FRONT RIGHT FRONT

4 When Turning Left: Be in the farthest left lane or turn lane
Protected-Green Arrow. Only time you have the right of way. Still yield to pedestrians Unprotected-Yield to oncoming traffic. Proceed when safe. Accelerate half-way through the turn

5 When Turning Right: Scanning left and right- Primarily LEFT
If at a red light: Make sure you make a complete stop behind thick white line (stopping line) Is it legal? (Look for a “No Turn on Red” sign) Is it safe? (scanning for traffic and pedestrians) Turn to nearest right lane

6 WHERE IS YOUR “POINT OF NO RETURN?”
THE POINT BEYOND WHICH YOU CAN NO LONGER STOP SAFELY WITHOUT ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. TWO-THREE SECONDS FROM THE INTERSECTION IN GOOD WEATHER

7 CLOSED FRONT ZONE WHAT DO YOU DO ?
~ REDUCE SPEED OR STOP, CHECK REAR ZONE ~

8 Controlled Intersections
Stop signs Yield signs Traffic Signals – Stale Green, Fresh Green, Yellow, & Red Unprotected Left Turn Protected Left Turn Turn on Red Controlled Railroad Crossing

9 RIGHT OF WAY??? THE TERM DESCRIBES THE PRIVLEDGE OF HAVING IMMEDIATE USE OF A CERTAIN PART OF A ROADWAY. TO YIELD?? IS TO ALLOW ANOTHER VEHICLE OR ROADWAY USER TO PROCEED FIRST.

10 GIVE EXAMPLES OF WHEN TO YIELD
YIELD SIGN STOP SIGN EMERGENCY VEHICLE ALLEY OR DRIVEWAY TURNING LEFT UNCONTROLED INTERSECTIONS

11 WHAT IS A GAP??? JOINING TRAFFIC:
HOW MANY SECONDS DOES IT TAKE TO CROSS TRAFFIC AT AN INTERSECTION FROM A STOP SIGN?? WHEN ACCELERATING TO 30 MPH. 1. GOING STRAIGHT? ABOUT 4-5 SECONDS 2. TURNING RIGHT? ABOUT 6 SECONDS 3. TURNING LEFT? ABOUT 7 SECONDS

12 Uncontrolled Intersections
How can you identify an uncontrolled intersection? Usually found in residential areas. There are no signs or signals to regulate traffic. What should you do at an uncontrolled intersection? Use the IPDE process at three locations: seconds from the intersection, 4-6 seconds from the intersection, and 2 seconds from the intersection.

13 Railroad Crossings Controlled Crossings
Railroad crossing controlled by lights and/or gates. DO NOT GO AROUND THE GATES!!! Uncontrolled Crossings No lights or gates. Usually will have at least a crossbuck. Found more in rural areas. Roll down window and listen for a train.
