Blood FLOW Blood flows from atrium to the ventricles Systemic circuit – Blood flow between the body and heart This blood leaves through the aorta Pulmonary refers to lungs Pulmonary arteries to the lungs Pulmonary veins take blood away from the lungs to the heart From the body, blood returns to the right atrium

Away from the Heart: Pulmonary artery, Aorta To the heart: Pulmonary vein, Vena Cava (body veins) Blood carries – oxygen, nutrients

Heart Rate Zone How much exercise you need to do to strengthen your heart without hurting it Lower target rate = 145 bpm: how much exercise you need to benefit your heart Upper target rate = how much exercise you can do before you hurt your heart Resting Heart rate: Your heart rate when you’re not exercising Low resting heart rate – Your heart doesn’t work as hard – so when you start exercise it won’t increase as much A lower resting rate indicates a heart in better shape
