Figurative Language in Action
The Tangerine Times printed a special pullout section on the Lake Windsor Middle School sinkhole. The photos were spectacular. They had one huge shot of the splintered walkways sticking up in all directions, like Godzilla had just trampled through there. -- Edward Bloor, Tangerine Write About It: Is the phrase the splintered walkways sticking up in all directions literal or figurative? Explain. …like Godzilla had just trampled through there is a simile. Why is it a simile and not a metaphor? (Don’t use the reason because it has the word ‘as’!) What are the literal and figurative terms? What is the effect of using this figurative language?

“Kabul” Read the poem first and just READ. Read the poem a second time and mark imagery. Make a list of the images the poet uses to praise the city of Kabul. For each image, jot down 2-3 key words from that image. Read the poem a third time and annotate the images. For each image, explain what is being suggested? (analysis) What do you learn about Kabul from reading this poem
6
“Kabul” This poem is an ode. An ode uses hyperbole and inflated language to glorify and enhance the subject and to create feelings of appreciation in the listener.
7
Poetry Analysis Re-read the poem “Kabul” and review the statements you wrote that analyze the images. Write a claim about the author’s use of imagery in the poem. What is its function?
8
“Kabul” Questions to consider/respond to about the poem, “Kabul” again: Who and what is the rose jealous of? This line contains an example of what poetic device? Explain the significance of the love the speaker feels for Kabul and the fact that the city hurts the speaker. Why blush? What makes people blush? What kinds of praises might the speaker be singing (metaphorical of course)? Find an example of where the poet mentions and extols something man-made. Think about this example. What is the example really referring to and how is it really used? What kind of woman is Kabul? How does this image of Kabul differ from your current image of Afghanistan?
