Texas Civil War Battles
Though there wasn’t a major U.S. battle fought in Texas, there were a handful of important battles that had an impact on our state.

Texas troops 60,000-70,000 Texas troops fought in the U.S. Civil War
Some Texas troops such as Terry’s Texas Rangers were sent to fight in Virginia with Robert E. Lee and the main Confederate army.

Galveston Island Reason: Earlier in the war the Union had captured Galveston, the largest port in Texas. The Confederates launched an attack to reclaim the island. Result: Battle was fought on January 1st, The Texans took over the island, and it remained in Confederate control the rest of the war.

Mansfield, Louisiana Reason: Union forces try to invade Texas and occupy the northern part of the state. Result: A smaller force of Confederate soldiers from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri defeated the Union soldiers and forced them to retreat. Texas was safe from invasion.

Palmito Ranch Reason: An attempt to establish a trade route into Mexico to import and export supplies. Result: -The last battle of the Civil War -Fought on May 13th, one month after the war had ended. -Won by the Texans, but they had already lost the war.
