Vital Signs – Indicate an Emergency Situation
Pulse Extension of Heartbeat Determined at Carotid Artery or Radial 60 – 80 BPM is Normal Signs Of Problems Rapid / Weak Rapid / Strong Strong / Slow

Vital Signs Cont. Blood Pressure
Amount of force against arterial walls Use cuff to measure Systolic – Blood starts pumping through artery again. Heart Pumps Normal ( ) Diastolic – Residual Pressure in between beats (Lower in females than in males) Signs Of Problems Decreased BP

Vital Signs Cont. Respiration Normal Rate 12/min Signs of Problems
Shallow Irregular Frothy Blood / Spitting Up Blood

Vital Signs Cont. Skin Color Temperature Red Pale/Ashen
Blue – CYANOSIS (Circulatory Problems) Temperature Thermometer – 98.6F Detected by Skin Signs of Problems Cool/Clammy Hot/Dry

Signs of Problems Constricted Dilated Diplopia – Double Vision Uneven Response to Light

Referred Pain – Pain in a different spot than where the injury is
Ex: Kehr Sign – Left shoulder hurts from spleen Injury

Primary Survey Assess Scene Look for Emergency Situations
Check for Consciousness / Quick Survey of Victim ABC’s – Airway Breathing Circulation If there is a problem with any of the ABC’s, call 911 Start CPR AED

Athlete Prone – Face Down Neck Injury Log Roll Need 4-5 people Designate someone for the role of “Captain” to watch over the athlete’s head
